Currents of Time: New Work by Zineb Sedira
Iniva - Rivington Place, London, UK United Kingdom

Iniva presents the first London exhibition of Zineb Sedira's recently commissioned video work Floating Coffins at Rivington Place. Floating Coffins was filmed on the little known but beautiful coastline of Mauritania, a bird watcher's paradise. It is also where the world's shipping is beached and broken up, drawing parallels with another of the region's characteristics - the harbour city of Nouadhibou, which has become a point of departure for African migrants trying to reach Europe.'This unique phenomenon on the Saharan shores represents both a hazard to shipping and an ecological threat. Also the sea becomes a space of 'decline' and an inactive landscape where lifeless ships and human bodies can be found rejected by the sea.' Ten Pound Ape : Your Mother was Beautiful Once, part vier
Claremont Museum of Art, Claremont, CA USA United States of America

The Claremont Museum of Art is pleased to present Ten Pound Ape: Your Mother was Beautiful Once, part vier from Wednesday, May 20 through Sunday, September 27, 2009. Founded in 2004 in Guanajuato, Mexico, Ten Pound Ape is an international art collective that engages in public intervention projects, which question the nature of civic sculpture, co-opt the verbiage of non-commercial street advertisements, and expand the boundaries of community. For this exhibition, Ten Pound Ape presents the fourth part of a series where the group builds a site-specific performance sculpture from collected urban debris and ephemera. This project fits the Museums objective of encouraging and supporting direct public engagement in its programming. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

3D Project Room Installation : Gulay Alpay
Broadway Gallery, New York, NY USA United States of America

The 3D Project Room Installation is a collaboration with the artist and designer Emre Erturk, who will be doing a performance with Gulay Alpay during the opening Reception. For love and peace! In 3D Project Room Installation Alpay creates an innovative world within a world. Each of these worlds are in the creating with a variety of mediums by Alpay and the several other collaborating artists and non-artist friends and guests during the show. Turkish artist Gulay Alpay has developed a reputation for poetic epic works that display both delicacy and fragility, revealing a deep respect for something fundamental, some primal, indigenous sense of shape and color, yet she creates with bursts of contemporary idioms. Her paintings are playful, spirited, freeform and deceptively complex. Theres not a single corner, hard edged, geometric line to be found in her composition, instead the shapes are as fluid as the submerged sounds that fuel her imagination. Gulay Alpay has promoted her work with a Portfolio at absolutearts.com since 2007. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Scraps - Art from a Dubai tragedy
Valerie Grove

One of the main areas for art galleries and activity in Dubai is the Al Quoz Industrial Zone. As the name suggests the area is grimy, dusty and mechanical, inhabited by warehouses, factories, storage depots and wholesale outlets. When rents were skyrocketing elsewhere in Dubai this area was still relatively cheap and the large and empty premises were ideal for conversion to gallery spaces so over the past five years or so a lot of galleries have set up here.

There are risks to living in an industrial zone and reports of warehouse fires are frequent. However a massive explosion and fire last year resulted in several casualties, 3 destroyed warehouses and a thick cloud of toxic smoke which hung over the whole city. Luckily none of the galleries were close enough to the site of the fire to be seriously affected and since then it seems that fire safety precautions have been improved.
