His singular eye gave him a unique take on the quintessence of Britishness, and he formed an archive of images that are as socially powerful as they are visually poetic. Brandt was in fact German, born in Hamburg in 1904, but spent much of his life in denial of his origins. He arrived in London in 1931, and so taken was he by England and its way of life that he began to insist he had been born in South London this started a lifelong metamorphosis into a stereotypical English gentleman. However, before embarking on this personal journey, Brandt had been fortunate enough to study under Man Ray in Paris, where he absorbed the aesthetics of Surrealism a training that would forever colour his photographs with the marvellous tint of European modernism. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com | | A Measure Of Art : Diane Althoff Cain Schulte Contemporary Art, San Francisco, CA USA United States of America CAIN SCHULTE GALLERY is proud to present 'A Measure of Art', new digital paintings by Bay-Area artist Diane Althoff. This summer exhibition will be on view at Sagan Piechota Architecture, located at 315 Linden Street in San Francisco. In her current series of multimedia images A Measure of Art, Diane Althoff offers a cogent examination of the value of contemporary art through her conceptual artworks. By combining the visual language of prominent artists such as Tomma Abts, Marlene Dumas, and Damien Hirst with numbers obtained from auction sales prices, Althoff graphs art market data--legibly presented in line with Edward Tufte's theories on the graphical display of information-directly into the canvases. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com | | Peter Harris : Self Portraits by Proxy 3, 4, 6 and 7 Mummery + Schnelle Gallery, London, UK United Kingdom Mummery + Schnelle are pleased to present the latest instalment of Peter Harriss extended project Self-Portraits by Proxy , begun in 1998. Harriss work plumbs what an artist is and has to be in order to survive. The materials he works from are those of mass culture - the mediated stuff of economies driven by fame and fortune, success, failure and anonymity. His collaborations function as a means of self-reflection on the status of the individual, the artist and the object as a hybridized cultural product. Increasingly, questions of identity in Harriss work and practice have been supplanted by the concept of staging the Self through actions performed. Instability here is exalted along with the perpetual mobility of the subject. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com | | Anais Martane: Portraits of Beijing, Solo Exhibition Pekin Fine Arts, Beijing, CN China 'Anais Martane : Portraits of Beijing, Solo Exhibition' opened at Pekin Fine Arts in Beijing on June 20 and runs through August 10, 2009. 'Portraits of Beijing' is a personal reflection on the pluralities of China, of the men and women from all walks of life who make Beijing what it is today: a city of many faces, each bearing his or her unique tale of every day existence in China's capital. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com | | Call for Artists : Design Virtual Shelters Using Google Earth and 3-D Modeling Software Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY USA The Solomon R.
