Remembering Nancy Spero
The Art Newspaper
Published: Oct 26, 2009
A former curator of the National Gallery of Canada and close friend of the artist looks back on her life and work. American artist Nancy Spero died on Sunday, 18 October, from complications from an infection. She was 83. Her health had been compromised for several years, yet, though increasingly frail, she continued to produce the politically engaged, feminist-inspired work for which she had become known over the course of an artistic career that spanned five decades.

Erin Shirreff : Landscapes, Heads, Drapery and Devils
Lisa Cooley Gallery, New York, NY USA United States of America

Lisa Cooley is pleased to present new work by Erin Shirreff in her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Landscapes, Heads, Drapery, and Devils. The exhibition opens on Sunday, October 25th and runs until December 20th, 2009. The exhibition title derives from a list of things that are commonly seen when we are confronted with perceptual ambiguity. In the moments before our mind can reconcile an unfamiliar shape or mass, it overlays fragments of a known quantity in an effort to recognize and order our experience. This process of projection and the fragments of our selves that we embed into our understanding of the world - the making of recognition - has been the basis of Shirreff's photography, video, and sculpture for the past several years. The nonspecific descriptors in the shows title sets the stage for a body of work that is temporally placeless, inLandscapes, Heads, Drapery, and DevilsShirreff conjures forms that evoke ancient geologic history and otherworldly, ephemeral phenomena. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Dennis Jones : Text Based Paintings
OK Harris Gallery, New York, NY USA United States of America

Dennis Jones will have a debut solo exhibition of several text-based paintings at, The OK Harris Gallery, in New York, this fall. Dennis Jones is a painter, architect and educator from Plymouth, Michigan, and one can see how much his architectural training, through his use of color, scale, material and construction, has influenced his oil and enamel paintings, as they can be read from across a large room with a bold clarity. Dennis Jones became a Premiere Portfolio Member at absolutearts.com in 2004. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

The Self and the Other . Portraiture in Contemporary Indian Photography
ARTIUM, Basque Centre-Museum of Contemporary Art, Vitoria-Gasteiz, ES Spain

The Self and the Other is an exploration of the photographic gaze that engages with personal and cultural identity. While personal identity can be viewed through different constructs of the Self, one cannot overlook the representation of the Other to understand the cultural identity of a people. Being the most enduring subject of a photographers gaze, the Other has played a significant role in the crystallisation of human memory and opinion. The subtitle of the exhibition, Portraiture in Contemporary Indian Photography refers to the prism through which we will view the shifts, dichotomies and disturbances across the complex social fabric of life in India. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective celebrates the extraordinary life and work of Arshile Gorky (about 19041948), a seminal figure in the movement toward abstraction that transformed American art. This exhibition, which includes about 178 works of art, surveys Gorkys entire career from the early 1920s until his death by suicide in 1948. The retrospective includes paintings, sculpture, prints, and drawingssome of which are being shown for the first timeand reveals Gorkys development as an artist and the evolution of his singular visual vocabulary and mature painting style. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Fleures et Femmes : Trisha Lambi and Nikki Porter
Tosari Galleries, Toowoomba, QL AU Australia

The birth of Trisha Lambis first child in 1996 proved to be the catalyst to fulfill her life long dream of becoming an artist. She started doing portraits of her son and progressed to running a small portrait business. She also found time to start oil painting - before this she had painted only three or four pieces so it was a steep learning curve. In 2003 she was invited to participate in the Fourth Edition of the Biennale Internazionale dellArte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy and she hasnt looked back. Trisha has promoted her artwork with a Premiere Portfolio at absolutearts.com since - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

INSIDERS
Alice Cavender, France

If you're coming to Bordeaux in the next few months, there is a stop you absolutely have to make. If the thought hadn't crossed your mind, plan a trip to Bordeaux anyway, come and taste the local specialities and save a day for a peek at the INSIDERS exhibition showing at the Entrepot Laine until the 7th of February 2010. You won't be disappointed.

The latest co-venture between CAPC museum of contemporary art and arc en reve centre d'architecture is worth the trip. Centred on the uses, practices and know-how that have developed over the past decades, the imposing colonial warehouse is home to a colourful and well-thought-up selection of art and architectural works that bring the true concept of DIY to life.

The exhibition presents a new type of creation, that who has come to life following massive globalisation of our societies. It's a creation that goes beyond this globalisation, looking for new ways of expressing itself, bringing together such things as daily life practices and artistic approaches, handcraft and state-of-the-art technology, human beliefs and rituals and industrial production. It all comes down to the fact that everyone is or can be an artist, that the everyday production that Mankind has found to respond to pragmatic or more utopian ideas can be and is art. This new network of resources and creativity makes up the INSIDERS, those who think up a new way of creating art, architecture - a new way of life.
