An American Dream : Gregg Jabs
Oceanside Museum of Art, Oceanside, CA USA United States of America

n this dramatic body of mixed media work, ceramic artist Gregg Jabs searches for The American Dream, only to find dysfunction. By questioning the reality of the dream, the myth begins to unravel with surprising results. Jabs uses multiple figures in his installations to present social and personal narratives that explore the delicate balance between collective identity and individual response with wry humor and keen insight. A preview reception introduces the exhibition on Saturday, August 29th from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. OMAs receptions are known for their party atmosphere complete with wine and scrumptious hors doeuvres prepared by OMAs own Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $10. Members of the museum enjoy complimentary admission as a benefit of membership. The exhibition will be on view August 30 through January 10, 2010. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Museum of Contemporary African Art and More : Meschac Gaba
Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, DE Germany

Starting on 29 August 2009, Meschac Gaba and Latifa Echakhch will focus on global and cultural differences at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum. With the exhibition Museum of Contemporary African Art and More Meschac Gaba is taking up aspects of African culture and, through the presentation in a museum, at the same time referring to a Western-oriented commercial world of art and products. With Les sanglots longs Latifa Echakhch has created a formal but very sensual installation in which she critically investigates issues around globalization as well as national differences and cultural identity. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

The Lake
Australian Center for Photography, Paddington, NS AU

In this exhibition eight contemporary photomedia artists explore the exquisite strangeness of the Australian landscape. Many of these images have been created in and around Australian lakes - Lake Eyre, Lake George or the man-made lakes resulting from the damming of Tasmanias rivers. But on another level, The Lake also serves as a metaphor for places that are at once seductive and dangerous, on whose mirrored surfaces our dark desires are reflected back at us. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Theory and Criticism
Matilda Anderson

For a long time a battle has been waging amongst art historians and critics. While it may not be apparent to the general public, it has affected the art community greatly, resulting in confusion and disagreement. It centers on the parameters of modernism and postmodernism. When you take an Art History survey class and ask about this dilemma your professor will almost certainly avoid the debate. You'll probably get an answer that's vague and insinuates that modernism ended in the 1960s. This type of response is a great disservice to the issue.

I personally began to think about this issue a few days ago when I was confronted about a prior article that I wrote, Graffiti, Abstract Expressionism, & Fabulous Auction Returns. Asserting that the criticism in the post was incomplete, he complained that I overlooked key issues. Specifically focusing on Dash Snow, he said that I failed to note that the artist had given up family fortune and fame (Snow hailed from the de Menil family) and had chosen to live a life on the streets.

Dances With Wolves: Vampiric Nature of Art-making and Personal Transformation
The New Gallery, Calgary, AB CA Canada

While photography has frequently been refered to as writing with light artist Ted Hiebert is interested in the mediums much less commonly articulated debt to darkness. His new installation Unbecomings, on view at The New Gallery in Eau Claire Market from August 28 though September 26, 2009, is a series of large format images which seek to mobilize the codes of photographic representation for their psychological and delusional possibilities. If photography has been mythologized as a technology which can steal souls, Hieberts work questions whether it may also perhaps possess the power to return them. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Exhibit 7 - An Experment with the Value of Art Curated by Antonio Puri
Art4Barter, New York, NY USA United States of America

What is Art4Barter? Bartering may be the answer to bail us out of our current crisis. Although artists have historically been bartering as much as possible it is more relevant now than ever before. It can provide a solution to survival for so many of us and create a new vision for society. The artists that are participating are all professional artists, and will present their works for barter. No works shall be sold for money but rather for services and goods. The exact service or good that the artist requires will be on the label next to their art. For example, if an artist were to ask for dental work or other medical procedures in exchange for their art, or for a studio to work in, etc., it will give the community an opportunity to barter for those items that are missing from the artists' lives. This unique exhibition is curated by Antonio Puri who has promoted his work with a Portfolio at absolutearts.com since 2000. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

On August 28, the de Young opens a new permanent exhibition in the Art of the Americas galleries, entitled, Yua, Spirit of the Arctic: Eskimo and Inuit Art from the Collection of Thomas G. Fowler. The word yua means spirit or soul.
