ABUENOS AIRES.- Peter Zumthor of Switzerland has been given the 2009 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The formal ceremony for what has come to be known throughout the world as architecture’s highest honor was held on May 29 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion was bestowed on the 65-year old architect. Although most of his work is in Switzerland, he has designed projects in Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, England, Spain, Norway, Finland and the United States. His most famous work is in Vals, Switzerland — the Thermal Baths, which has been referred to by the press as “his masterpiece.” Most recently critics have praised his Field Chapel to Saint Nikolaus von der Flüe near Cologne, Germany. The Cartoons of John T. McCutcheon: Chronicles of A Changing World
CHICAGO.- Cartoonist John T. McCutcheon was such a sharp observer of basic human nature that people still find aspects of themselves in his work, some of which was created over one hundred years ago. As an editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Record and Chicago Tribune newspapers between 1889 and 1946, his drawings chronicled a rapidly changing world. Philanthropists Donald and Beth Sobey Make An Additional Gift For Research
OTTAWA.- The National Gallery of Canada Foundation announced that it has received an additional gift from Stellarton, Nova Scotia arts philanthropists Donald and Beth Sobey for The Donald and Beth Sobey Chief Curator's Research Endowment. This additional gift brings the financial value of their support to the institution to more than $2.2 million. The Endowment was created in 2002 with the objective of giving the National Gallery the opportunity to conduct and publish scholarly research of national and international significance under the guidance of its Chief Curator, Dr. David Franklin.

Northern Print Biennale 2009: Shortlist Announced
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE.- Having viewed over 8,000 pieces of work, the judges Stephen Chambers RA, Kip Gresham and Gill Saunders, have selected 90 artists from all over the world whose diverse approach to printmaking reflects the medium's endless potential in contemporary art practice. The shortlist includes internationally renown names including Louise Bourgeois and Mimmo Paladino, alongside lesser-known artists and those exhibiting for the first time.
