David Seidner: Paris Fashions, 1945 Opens at the International Center of Photography
NEW YORK, NY.- David Seidner: Paris Fashions, 1945 presents photographs of a collection of couture-clad dolls made for the Théâtre de la Mode, a wildly creative effort by the French fashion industry to broadcast to the world that they were back in business after World War II. In 1990, contemporary fashion photographer David Seidner (1957–1999) was asked to photograph the dolls for a reconstruction of the original project. Through September 6, 2009, fifteen of these color photographs from the David Seidner Archive, along with one of the original dolls, are view at the International Center of Photography. After the liberation of 1944, the French couture industry was badly weakened. Shortages of food, electricity, and supplies brought production to a virtual standstill. During the Occupation, strict fabric rations were imposed on the couture houses, which faced the constant threat of foreclosure. To help revive the international ...More

Hammer Museum Presents Hammer Projects: Nic Hess
LOS ANGELES, CA.- The Hammer Museum presents today Hammer Projects: Nic Hess, on view through November 5, 2009. Swiss artist Nic Hess is known for his inventive wall works composed almost entirely of masking tape. Like a master graffiti artist, he turns everyday imagery into bold graphics, often borrowing logos from corporations, and intertwining disparate images to form entirely new works. Combining his own drawings, commercial prints, bright colored tape and paint, and icons from a variety of sources, Hess makes us reevaluate our understanding of familiar signs in consumer culture, and incorporates multiple contradictory images and viewpoints. In his elaborate compositions he draws new connections between popular culture and historical images and weaves a loose narrative of worlds colliding and visions exploding. For the Hammer’s Lobby Wall, Hess will present a new tape-drawing installation designed specifically for t...More

MASS MoCA Presents Today This Is Killing Me
NORTH ADAMS, MA.- MASS MoCA presents today This Is Killing Me, on view through April 15, 2010. Drawing on the anxieties inherent in art-making, This is Killing Me brings together eight young artists who in their diverse practices make palpable a distinctive sense of unease about their identities as artists and the creation of their work. Although professional anxiety is common in all fields, artists often explore and harness these fears into central and driving themes. The artists in this exhibition point to a divide between the coolness and deft craftsmanship of their works and the apprehension and angst that went into their making. The amusing, often riotous quality of the pieces underscores this tension....More

Preview Berlin - The Emerging Art Fair
BERLIN.- After Preview Berlin – The Emerging Art Fair was successfully held in Hangar2 for the past two years, the fair will, this year, be held in the former airport’s main hall. Moving away from the classic fair concept, the organizers are, this year, aiming more for an exhibition format whereby there will be no typical fair constructions. This is in response to the special features of the heritage protected main hall of the former airport and also time limits due to another event which is being held in the same location in the run up to the fair. Their idea is to bring together projects which can be exhibited without partition walls and which, therefore, come primarily from the fields of sculpture, installation, performance or video. Furthermore, an exciting challenge will also be the possible artistic discourse with the historic setting....More
