Shimon Okshteyn: Dangerous Pleasures - New Paintings and Sculpture
Stux Gallery, New York, NY USA United States of America

Stux Gallery, New York is pleased to announce Dangerous Pleasures, an exhibition of new works by Shimon Okshteyn. A cacophony of visual abundance and the excessive aesthetics of pleasure and pain are at the heart of Dangerous Pleasures, which features hyper-realistic paintings, sculpture and mixed media installations. The exhibition will be on view from October 23rd through December 6th, 2008, and will be accompanied by a full color catalogue with an essay by Dominique Nahas. In these massively scaled works, Okshteyn expands upon his signature sensational mimetic representations of old master paintings and objects culled from every day life to focus his sites on the vices of contemporary culture. Here the artist assumes the role of snake charmer, or master of ceremonies, hawking his liniments, lotions and snake oil concoctions, all the while acutely focusing our attention on the collective shortcomings of society, both real and perceived. Painted directly onto the surfaces of highly reflective mirrors, viewers are forcefully inserted into the artists dialogues with Heroin (2008), Cocaine (2008), Extasy (2008), and Pills - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Universal Archive. The Condition of the Document and the Modern Photographic Utopia
Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona, ES Spain

The MACBA presents Universal Archive. The Condition of the Document and the Modern Photographic Utopia, an exhibition which brings together almost 2,000 vintage photos and other documents dated between 1851 and 2008 by some 250 authors, from Lewis Hine to William Klein. The survey or photographic mission came into existence with a specific goal: to build the image of the emerging city in a time of huge but difficult to visualise transformation. It was the writer Prosper Merime who, in 1851, sponsored the first major photographic campaign in history: the Mission Hliographique, intended to create a public photographic archive of French historical monuments through the work of leading photographers. This mission constitutes the first formalisation of the photographic utopia in modern culture: the construction of a universal archive. Towards the end of 2006, the Museu dArt Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) adopted the model of the photographic survey, historically promoted through government bodies, and initiated a project based on Barcelona, aiming to offer a diagnosis of today's city and its focuses of transformation for the 21st century. Commissioning photographers from various generations and backgrounds, the Museum set out to investigate the notions of photographic document and city. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Valentina DuBasky: Mongolian Horses and Siberian Tigers - New Paintings on Paper and Canvas
Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts, New York, NY USA United States of America

Cheryl Pelavin Fine Arts is proud to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Valentina DuBasky. The new series of 'cave-wall' paintings, Mongolian Horses and Siberian Tigers, is inspired by recent travels from the Amur River basin that forms a natural border between Manchuria, Inner Mongolia and the Russian Far East to the mountain highlands and forest monasteries between Burma and Thailand. DuBasky's paintings of horses, bison and stags began twenty years ago with travels to research cave-wall and ancient art along the Silk Route. Her animals appear within a thickly painted 'strata' of oil paint and wax and have been compared to the mythic cave paintings of Lascaux and Altamira. With her introduction to modern day Mongolians the artist was able to also connect to a culture that has a living and vibrant connection to its ancestral roots. Her travels are often in conjunction with ecological, historical or cultural missions, and her adventures bring her into close contact with the people and their lives. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

"...evolve and make yourself into a vessel where a total stranger can find peace and joy" unknown

I returned from Italy with a dancing heart and a singing soul. Having met my lost children, mothers, brothers, sisters, lovers and teachers from another time and age with joy and love, it took me a couple of weeks to come back down to the reality of life and times and the unspoken word "recession".

So I did what every good ostrich does, ignored the fact that my husband was laid off and now out of work and that our meager savings would no doubt vanish without a whimper before things got better.

Thusly I charged forward putting the final touches on my book, published it and set it out into this troubled world to help people smile. I took all that passion I gained in Italy and painted a new painting filled with the anticipation of more to come from another quarter in the future. I have one new student and have another for a potential class at a business in town offering leisure time activities. I joined the committee for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet and learned that I have nothing in common with anyone but I can be of use. After all, the Chamber was the only public place that allowed the Freedom and Art book to be set free.
