Zineb Sedira: Floating Coffins
New Art Exchange, Nottingham, UK United Kingdom

New Art Exchange (NAE) Nottingham, launches a major new exhibition by the internationally celebrated artist Zineb Sedira. Floating Coffins, commissioned by NAE, is a video and sound installation exploring a ship graveyard in Mauritania. This solo exhibition will also show Sedira's Saphir and MiddleSea. Floating Coffins (2009) is a multi-screen video installation shot in Nouadhibou, Mauritania. The area is known for its stunning habitat to migratory birds yet there is another sinister aspect to the location: the departure of sub-Saharan Africans to Europe, who often return, rejected by the system or the sea. The city is also renowned for its surreally epic cemetery of ships. Eroded and corroded by harsh weather conditions and plundered by local residents, there is a poignancy to the vision of these beaches filled with wrecks, unwanted objects, bodies, men transiting and and foreign birds visiting. In the artist's own words, 'Floating Coffins is a space where life, death, loss, escape, abandoned and shipwrecked journeys meet. It's both a toxic graveyard and a source of survival and hope.' - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

KAREN SPERLING'S MAGICAL MYSTICAL TOUR
Michael Corbin

Karen Sperling is an artist I met outside the Bridge Art Fair at Art Basel Miami Beach this past December 2008. I stumble upon most of the artists I meet and Karen was no different. As she walked by, she introduced herself and handed me an invitation to her group show. I'm glad that she did. While viewing the exhibition, I was impressed by what I saw work that seemed gritty and edgy to me, yet warm and dreamlike. They were part of her Magical Mystical Tours series. She agreed to an email interview in which we chatted about her work, leaving New York for Los Angeles, the benefits of being a sociable artist and what it was like meeting the great Andy Warhol years ago. You can see some of her work at www.karensperling.com but first, take this tour. I think you'll enjoy the ride ...

MICHAEL: Hi Karen. Now that some time has passed since Art Basel Miami Beach 2008, how are you feeling about your experience there?
