NEW YORK, NY.- For as long as he can remember, Eli Wilner has understood the importance of a frame to a work of art. "My great uncle was an art collector," he recalls "and he insisted that everything had to be in an antique frame, so even as a kid my paintings were always framed. Then they would be placed next to a Chagall or a Klee, so I thought I was a great master." Since opening his gallery in 1983, Wilner has established himself as a leading authority on the art of framing, with a client roster that includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cooper Hewitt Museum, the Corcoran Gallery and the White House." ... Frye Art Museum Exhibition Explores American Modernism
SEATTLE, WA.- Open Roads and Bedside Tables: American Modernism in the Frye Collection, on view from September 26, 2009 through January 10, 2010, presents works from the Frye Collection that explore how American artists created distinctly American subjects for American audiences. In the early twentieth century, artists grappled with this concept as they attempted to image a United States that was no longer a colony, nor an unwanted offspring of a grand European vision. Modernism, a complex and contested term, is used to describe America's self-conscious break from past European traditions in the visual arts. Intense debate about American modernism began with two important New York City exhibitions, the Macbeth Gallery exhibition of The Eight in 1908 and the International Exhibition of Modern Art—the Armory Show—of 1913. Both exhibitions incited criticism and brought into productive tension and high relief Europe ... More

At the urging of his friend Margaret Crocker, Jackson became "custodian" of the newly founded E. B. Crocker Art Gallery in 1885, a position he faithfully fulfilled for 50 years. From 1886 to 1900, he was the head of the Sacramento School of Design, the art school conducted in the Museum's ornate Victorian Ballroom. Modest and diffident about promoting himself and his works from his studio in a small city off the beaten track, Jackson was never appreciated to the full extent of his talent. 'New York Sleeps' Christopher Thomas at Bernheimer Fine Old Masters, Munich
MUNICH.- This is New York! Or are they dream worlds, chimeras, inventions, or perhaps testimony to a past era? Viewers are astonished, recognizing the places and getting lost in memories. A city of silence, beyond the turbulence of everyday life, a metropolis with no people, as if a spell had been cast on it: Grand Central Station, Fifth Avenue, the Flatiron Building, Katz's Restaurant, the Brooklyn Bridge-familiar, but never seen this way before. When we unsuspectingly removed these photographs from a drawer-seven views, all taken in 2001 (before September 11), softly sketched as a result of long exposure times, printed on deckle-edge paper with the streaky border of a Polaroid-we urged the photographer to return to New York, where he had lived now and again over an extended period, in order to continue the series. The Human Eclectic: An Exhibition Curated by Kent Williams at Merry Karnowsky Gallery
LOS ANGELES, CA.- What is becoming of the 'us' – the 'each of us'? Where will all of our technology leave us? Maybe it's our detachment from the reality of mass human destruction, or the invited dehumanization of our existence through computers and online interactions. It could be our growing desensitization to cruelty, to violence and to suffering through the television invasion. Whatever it is, it appears we have stopped celebrating, or even acknowledging, the very thing that defines our entire race – our humanity. We are offering it up, as though sacrificially, to the machines we create and worship. Because of this almost inevitable crisis of self, we find it important again, maybe now more than ever in the history of art making, to cling to our most basic possession – the human form. Call it a quiet revolution – the lone artist embracing the representation of man again – slowly and deliberately turning himself back around to ... More

Redcoats, rangers, American Indians and settlers mingled at the site as England and France fought for control of North America. ... More

Exhibition at Tacoma Art Museum Merges Modern-day Patterns with Tradition
TACOMA, WA.- Joe Feddersen: Vital Signs, a major retrospective exhibition of work by this highly regarded artist and teacher, is on view at Tacoma Art Museum September 26, 2009, through January 10, 2010. Vital Signs features an extraordinary selection of Joe Feddersen's printmaking, collage, glass, and weaving created since 1996. Through powerful combinations of contemporary forms and Native American iconography, the works in the exhibition demonstrate the artist's fascination with the interrelationships between urban place makers—such as parking lots, tire tracks, high voltage towers, cinder blocks, and chain link fencing—and the landscape Feddersen finds in the Northwest. Following in the footsteps of his Plateau Indian ancestors, who interpreted their environment in the patterns of their baskets, Feddersen transforms the rhythms of the urban centers and natural landscapes surrounding him into art ... Robert Motherwell: An Attitude Toward Reality, Opens at the Block Museum of Art
CHICAGO, IL.- The art and rhetoric of Robert Motherwell helped define the New York School, a group of abstract painters active in the 1940s and 1950s that also included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning. With an extensive academic background, Motherwell acted as the movement's unofficial spokesperson, writing and speaking about his generation of artists. Influenced by surrealism and psychology, Motherwell employed techniques designed to release the artistic process from rational control and express the subconscious, as seen, for example, in his Lyric Suite drawings. His art explored themes both intimate, such as a series of collages incorporating personal items like cigarette packets and pieces of mail, and international, like Elegy to the Spanish Republic, a subject he reworked in various formats throughout his life. Robert Motherwell: An Attitude Toward Reality, From the Collection of the Walker Art Center offers an overview and introduction to the artis ... More

New Book Presents Most Comprehensive Collection of Projects Built by Jim Olson
NEW YORK, NY.- On November 17, 2009, The Monacelli Press will release Jim Olson Houses, the most comprehensive collection of projects built in the last decade by the founding partner of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects as well as the most prominent heir to the legacy of the 1950's Northwest master architects. With a series of photographs documenting both exteriors and interiors at 16 residences in Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, and Hong Kong, the book represents the holistic approach that has guided Olson throughout his career. The result is a vision that delicately mixes the architectural tradition of the Pacific Northwest, the influence of the Pacific Rim, and their focuses on indigenous craft. Jim Olson's work, as seen in this new book, reveals the mastery of an architect and his subtle understanding of the world around him. The introduction to Jim Olson Houses is written by Michael Webb. Known for his elegant residences, each of wh ... More

The Morgan Presents Special, Limited-Run Exhibition of Original Drawings from Children's Classic
NEW YORK, NY.- The Morgan Library & Museum announced that it will present a special exhibition of original drawings and manuscript pages from the classic children's book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (b. 1928). Other events will take place at Lincoln Center, The New York Public Library, and The Museum of Modern Art. The Sendak works are on loan to the Morgan from the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia. The exhibition presents a rare opportunity to witness Sendak's creative process—from his early drafts about an unnamed boy in search of wild horses to the well-known narrative about a child named Max taming the beastly "things" of his own imagination. Twelve drawings and two manus ... More

Morris & Co Stained Glass Comes Home to Stockport
LONDON.- Six stained glass windows that were originally housed in the chapel of Stockport's Cheadle Royal Hospital have been returned to the area. Made by renowned decorative arts firm Morris & Co, they were acquired by the Stockport Story Museum with the help of a grant of £50,000 from independent charity The Art Fund towards a total cost of £93,000. Four of the windows were designed by Edward Burne-Jones and one by William Morris, both of whom were eminent artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement and founding members of British design company Morris & Co. The sixth was designed by John Henry Dearle, who was an apprentice to William Morris before becoming Art Director and principal stained glass designer at the company. Andrew Macdonald, Acting Director of The Art Fund, said: "Morris & Co were particularly renowned for their stained glass work and these are striking examples originally made for the Cheadle Royal Hospital, wh ... Artblogs - Art Blogs:
Welcome to the Wilderness
Barney Davey

It is not just visual artists. In many ways, these days we are all wanderers in the wilderness. That is, if the wilderness can be described as being in a place unfamiliar to us. I am not talking about healthcare, global warming, housing or the economy here. There are plenty of sources for information on those topics. I am specifically discussing how getting your art to market is different and more unfamiliar these days. Can there be artist reading this post who has not changed up what they are doing in an effort to stimulate sales? This is not completely new. Smart marketing artists have always looked for new ways to create selling opportunities. What is different now is the old ways of doing things have become less reliable than in the past. Tradeshows such as ArtExpo New York and Decor Expo Atlanta are a shell of their former glorious selves. The sister magazines that serve the same audience of art dealers and galleries, notably Art Business News, Art World News and Decor are slimmed down versions of their peak years.
