James Dormer and Paul Flippen
Translations Gallery, Denver, CO USA United States of America

Translations Gallery is proud to feature work by Colorado State Fine Art Professors James Dormer and Paul Flippen. The exhibitions runs from August 20 through September 15, 2009 in Denver. The essence of James Dormer's printmaking work is found in nature, though it is not an attempt to portray the local landscape. Paul Flippen creates visual puzzles. His works are autobiographical, functioning as metaphorical self-portraits that communicate through the layering of associative meaning. Translations Gallery promotes their artists with a Gallery Portfolio at absolutearts.com. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Sam Francis Prints : The Last of Their Kind
Leslie Sacks Fine Art, Los Angeles, CA USA United States of America

In 1993 Leslie Sacks Fine Art identified Sam Francis aquatints as some of the finest and most under valued prints in the market. The gallery therefore made a major commitment to building a collection. They selected those images they felt were the most compelling and purchased the entire remaining balance of these editions directly from the artist. All of these aquatints are in very small editions of approximately 20. They were editioned by master printmaker Jacob Samuel at Sams print studio, The Litho Shop, in Santa Monica. Each print in every edition is slightly different than the rest as Sam gave Jacob the latitude to vary colors in certain areas of the images. Also included in the show are several substantially unique color trial proofs containing large, complex areas of watercolor by the artists hand. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Uwe Wittwer
Haunch of Venison, London, London, UK United Kingdom

For his first solo show with Haunch of Venison in London, Swiss painter Uwe Wittwer (b. 1954) has embarked on a new body of work that carries on his artistic research on the authenticity and truth of images and the role of the artist as image hunter and voyeur. The show focuses on latest paper works in watercolour and inkjet and gives an introduction to recurrent motifs in the artists oeuvre: Old Masters paintings, still life, interiors and genre scenes. A series of new inkjets deal with the issue of voyeurism and privacy, the vaguely recognizable interiors are based on images of homes for sale in suburban London that were sourced on estate agents Foxtons website. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

Have you ever had one of those days at work where you just want to scream, "WHY AM I HERE? NO, REALLY! WHY AM I HERE?" Who hasn't?

Of course, you know why you're there. It's your job and you need to get paid to pay the bills. Okay and yes, you want to be productive in the world. Yet, isn't it funny how job frustration is rarely about the work itself? We're all pretty much trained to do what we do, so while the work can be challenging, it's never impossible. It's usually about the people ... the clashing agendas, the egos and the personalities. When others get involved, your quiet corner for creating and carrying out a simple, almost pleasant task becomes the intersection of monumental effort and pain. It's when that proverbial committee is supposed to be creating a horse, but squawks out a camel. That was my day today. When it was time to leave, I bolted. Finally, I had gotten the job done, even though my sanity was shaky.

Mandala: The Perfect Circle - Buddhist Cosmic Diagrams Come to Life
Rubin Museum of Art, New York, NY USA United States of America

Mandala: The Perfect Circle takes visitors from the 8th to the 21st century, displaying some of the oldest known mandalas in the world, large paintings found in the Dunhuang caves in northwestern China, alongside virtual, computer-generated varieties created by designers at Cornell University and Zurich University. On rare loan from the Musee Guimet in Paris, an early Dunhuang mandala masterfully depicts a crowded pantheon of deities, each situated symmetrically in its proper symbolic place. The virtual mandalas will provide an explosion of intense digital color in rare three-dimensional views of a mandalas creation and final form. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com

The AVA in partnership with Spier presents the opening of a new photographic exhibition entitled 'FLATLANDS - by Marc Shoul'. The exhibition runs from 18 of August - 04 September 2009. Johannesburg has always been a city of immigrants, a beacon for people searching for 'gold' in one form or another. Today, this sprawling and ambivalent metropolis continues to attract a constant stream of hopefuls from all over Africa. And many of these new arrivals settle in the Joburg inner city, which has become a hub for the entire sub-continent. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com
