NEW YORK.- Christie's highly anticipated Latin American Sale totaled $11,004,350, led by strong results for Mario Carreño, Leonora Carrington, and Diego Rivera. Five new world auction records were achieved for artists Leonora Carrington, René Portocarrero, Helio Oiticica, Roberto Aizenberg, and Lygia Pape. The sale was 68% sold by lot and 77% by value. “Icons of Latin American modernism led the sale tonight with strong results for the top three lots, all of which date from the 1940s. We are particularly excited about the long overdue recognition and important world auction record for Leonora Carrington, whose work surpassed the $1million dollar mark, and for the spectacular price realized for the rediscovered masterpiece Fuego en el batey by the Cuban master Mario Carreño, which became the second highest auction price achieved for the artist. OTTAWA.- The power, politics and drama that surrounded papal patronage in 16th-century Rome will be revealed in a magnificent new exhibition opening at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) on May 29. From Raphael to Carracci: The Art of Papal Rome represents an unprecedented survey of art in this period. Presented by Sun Life Financial, it will be on view until September 7, 2009. This large international loan exhibition brings together over 150 exceptional paintings and drawings for the first time by celebrated artists such as Michelangelo, Titian, El Greco, Vasari, Barocci and Annibale Carracci. In addition, pieces by lesser known, but nonetheless superb artists are also included. | Van Gogh Museum Acquires Painting by Pierre Bonnard |
AMSTERDAM.- The Van Gogh Museum has recently been able to enrich its collection with the painting Montmartre in the rain by Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947). The work forms a valuable addition to the Van Gogh Museum's extensive collection of Nabis prints. Bonnard painted Montmartre in the rain in 1897 at the peak of his Nabis period. The painting is typical of Bonnard's early style. The acquisition represents the Van Gogh Museum's next step in building up a collection of Nabis paintings, following its purchase of The two sisters by Maurice Denis (1870-1943) in 1991. The painting may be viewed until 20 September 2009 on the third floor of the Rietveld building. The purchase was made possible with support from the BankGiro Lottery, which contributed around half the purchase price, the Rembrandt Association (supported by Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds) and the VSB Foundation.

NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby’s spring 2009 sale of Latin American Art in New York brought a total of $9,422,625 (est. $10.6/14.3 million). The top lot of the two-day sale was Diego Rivera’s Niña con rebozo, a work in tempera on linen which sold last night for $794,500, well above a high estimate of $450,000 and record for the artist in the medium. Nineteen auction records were established during the sale, for artists including Enio Iommi, Mercedes Pardo, Andreas López, Édouard-Théophile Pingret, Irene Sierra Carreño and Jose Antonio Davila, for a sculpture by Hugo Demarco, a painting by Martha Boto and for works on paper by Kcho and León Ferrari. In 1985, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors backed a resolution designating San Francisco a sanctuary city--one of the first in the US--for certain Central American refugees. The resolution decreed that police, schools, and health and social-service agencies were forbidden from assisting INS agents during potential investigations and arrests of Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees. Though the legislation was revised in the 90s and has been broadly and variously interpreted since its initial enactment, it remains in effect. | Contemporary Craft Market Flourishes at Collect 2009 |
LONDON.- Collect 2009, the Crafts Council's international art fair for contemporary objects, enjoyed high visitor figures and strong sales. In its sixth year, the fair relaunched at a new venue, exhibiting over three floors of the Saatchi Gallery, from 15 – 17 May 2009. Known as the place to view and buy the very best in contemporary crafts, over 10,000 visitors attended, with international private collectors and public institutions making significant acquisitions. Clare Beck at Adrian Sassoon reported over forty sales, of diverse objects ranging in height from 2 centimetres to 2 metres.
